Early Years apprenticeships are an incredible way to start or grow your career, but there are still plenty of misconceptions out there. Let’s clear them up and show you why apprenticeships are a brilliant choice for your future.
Myth 1: Apprenticeships are only for school leavers
Fact: Apprenticeships aren’t just for teenagers. If you’re 16 or older and living in England, you can apply; whether you’re leaving school, returning to work, or already working in a nursery and want to progress. There’s no upper age limit!

Myth 2: Apprenticeships don’t lead to proper qualifications
Fact: Every apprenticeship gives you a nationally recognised qualification. In Early Years, that means Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications that count towards staffing ratios and meet EYFS standards. These are respected across the sector and open doors to higher-level roles.

Myth 3: Apprenticeships don’t pay well
Fact: Apprentices earn while they learn. The current minimum apprenticeship wage is £7.55 per hour (as of April 2025), but many nurseries pay more to attract great people. Plus, once you complete your apprenticeship, your earning potential grows significantly.

Myth 4: Apprenticeships are only for vocational trades
Fact: Apprenticeships exist in almost every sector, and Early Years is one of the fastest-growing. With the government expanding funded childcare, nurseries need more qualified practitioners than ever before.

Myth 5: Apprenticeships are the easy option

Myth 6: Employers don’t value apprenticeships
Fact: Employers love apprenticeships because they build skilled, confident teams. For nurseries, apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to grow talent and improve quality. Many managers see apprentices as the future leaders of their settings.

Myth 7: There’s no progression after Level 2 or Level 3
Fact: Apprenticeships are just the beginning. In Early Years, you can move from Level 2 to Level 3, then onto Level 5 leadership roles, and even degree-level study later. Your career can grow as far as you want to take it.

Myth 8: Apprenticeships are second best compared to university
Fact: Apprenticeships are a high-quality route into a career. You gain qualifications, practical experience, and earn a wage, without student debt. Many apprentices go on to senior roles or higher education later, with stronger employability.
